Hello!
I’m writing from my boyfriend’s parents’ house in Ohio, where the fields roll on for miles (see evidence below). It’s been nice to be out of the city and in a quiet corner of the world, where spring is slowly announcing itself in blue skies and budding blossoms and bird chirps.
Speaking of the bright bursts that disrupt the gray span of wintry gloom, welcome to a fun new series called “One Nice Thing A Day!” In this series, I’ll share a drawing of a (you guessed it) nice thing from each day since my previous newsletter. And yes, okay, I’ve certainly been influenced by the Tiktoks of cool teenagers filling out their bullet journals, as well as my therapist’s advice to write down the good stuff from each day — I think some people call this gratitude? Fine! I’ll try it!
As for my recommendations, I’m going to share links for any of the nice things that can be, well, linkable:
Here’s the recipe for the rich red curry from The Minimalist Baker. I added crispy tofu for a little extra protein.
Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters is worth the read — linked here is Emily VanDerWerff’s review of the book for Vox, which does a far better job singing its praises than I could. Bonus recommendation: I also finished Emiy Layden’s All Girls, which was a brilliant escape. You can find the NYT book review here!
Give Harry Kalahiki’s Mungo Plays Ukulele a listen next time you go for a walk. It’s a vacation for the ears.
If you are a DC dweller, the Shirley from Timber Pizza has stolen my heart (I order it with no meat — the jalapeños carry it, I swear!).
Since I can’t link to a downloadable baby goat, here is a gif that’s almost like the real thing. Almost.
And finally, for all of my fellow goblin-cottagecore spring lovers, please enjoy this too-accurate Tiktok (the things I would do to pick raspberries with all of you right now!!!!).
See you next time,
Haley

The Shirley sans meat from Timber is also my favorite! They get their spicy honey from Little Red Fox in the Forest Hills neighborhood and I'm hoping that one day they'll bottle it. If you haven't tried Little Red Fox it's worth the trip up Connecticut ave. They also have a great hot sauce they bottle. It's mild and has a sweetness to it - perfect for breakfast. Comet pizza is also great up there and I love the 90's childhood vibes it has, Bread Furst is also amazing, and if you need to work up an appetite between carb loading there's a Politics and Prose, the Soapstone-Valley Trail, and The Hillwood Estate - I know it's such a bummer to pay money for museums in DC but Hillwood is worth-it for the instagram gardens alone) I hope you're enjoying DC. It's without a doubt an underrated city full of personality.
