Because I’m so belated with my October recap, this one’s free to all subscribers (I typically keep monthly phone wallpapers and more personal updates behind a paywall). ENJOY!
This month, we’re dressing our phone screens up with gentle colors and only the coziest of vibes. Download your favorite (or both!) here.
October was a wild ride. My husband and I were at the tail-end of a trip to Spain when I got a phone call from my dad. I had a gut feeling that it would be about my grandfather, who had been in poor health for the past few months. Unfortunately, I was right.
Grandpa George was a character. He preferred his red wine chilled and ordered dessert at every meal—usually apple pie with vanilla ice cream. I cannot recall a single time he wasn’t wearing a suit, even though he lived in balmy Florida for the entirety of my life. Sometimes, when I called my grandparents’ landline, Grandpa would answer the phone with a jolly “Ahoy!”
I offered to write the obituary (which I drafted from the tiny desk in our hotel room) and changed my return flight so that I could attend the memorial in Fort Lauderdale. I all but fell into my parents’ arms after landing, my muscles tight after ten hours in a cramped airplane seat.
The funeral proceedings spanned over two days. I reminisced with my cousins and hugged my grandmother and held my dad’s hand. At the end of each day, my sister and I crawled into our shared bed and propped my iPad against a pillow, all but falling asleep to the latest season of Love is Blind.
It ended up being time well spent with my family, but I arrived back in Seattle absolutely zonked—not ideal, given that Gideon and I were in the process of moving from our apartment to a new place across the city.
ALL TO SAY: I have been a bit behind on things. My brain feels tired, as if it’s been on a treadmill with no off button. But as I write this from a coffee shop, things are feeling more settled (read: I’m watching the final season of Gilmore Girls and eating lots of soup). I appreciate you all for offering a soft place to land amidst the chaos.
Of course, it wouldn’t be my newsletter without highlighting a few of October’s sweeter moments:
And as for how October looked:
Thanks so much for reading. I’m very lucky to have all of you here!
Love love love!

Sorry for your tender heart, loss never gets easy. I know it’s not cool (& slightly weird?) but when I discover a fellow citizen of my beloved Seattle by the Salish Sea I feel like I met a friend.
Clap clap clap clap clap!
