#9: Conversations With Anxiety (Episode One)
Plus a class that will teach you how to illustrate your own feelings!
Hello!
It’s been a minute since I last sent a newsletter. Okay, it’s been a whole month. Whoops.
But I’m back, and I’m excited to share a new series called “Conversations With Anxiety,” which is, uh, exactly what it sounds like. I don’t know about you guys, but my anxiety has been manifesting in new and unusual ways with life reopening in the States. Not unlike a metal bucket left out in the rain (since March 2020!!), my social skills feel rusty, and my energy for doing things depletes quicker than it used to. More than anything, I feel stressed about change — even changes as simple as working from a coffee shop rather than at my desk in the dark basement room my boyfriend and I call our home office. This feeling leads me to the first conversation:
Just another day in the life!
As for a few recommendations:
Ana Valen’s article for Vox on allyship during Pride month (and beyond) was originally written in 2019, but is still SO worth the read.
I made this stir fry recipe a few weeks ago and am still dreaming about it.
Bo Burnham’s latest Netflix special “Inside” is one of the most fascinating bouts of television I’ve watched in a while. I recommend (disclaimer: it touches on the experience of isolation and performance, so if you’re not ready for that kind of content, maybe hold off for a bit on this one). Rachel Syme’s review for The New Yorker is also worth the read!
And, of course, a few Haley-themed updates:
I’m teaching an online class at the end of the month! Part of Skillpop’s Summer Series, the course focuses on storytelling through art. This class will teach you how to untangle your feelings through illustration, ways to reframe your emotions (and be vulnerable with them!), and exercises that help ignite self reflection and discovery. Beginners welcome!
I’ve updated my Patreon levels! If you decide to join for $2 a month, you’ll have access to Patreon-only content, Q&As, comic subject polls, downloadable wallpapers, and day-in-the-life content! Learn more here — I’d love to share this community with you!
And if you’re not interested in joining the Patreon community, I recently set up a “Buy Me A Coffee” page, which allows for one time donations to artists you like. As always, I appreciate any support in my quest to continue making accessible comics and newsletters.
That’s all for this week! I’ll see you guys soon (I promise!). Here’s a Tiktok to send you off in the best way possible.
Happy June!
Haley
