Hi!
June will always be an especially beloved month for me: it’s the start of summer, all of my favorite fruits are in season, and I get to wear a birthday hat.
Anyway! Here are some books and shows and fabrics that only further elevated this month:
READS
The Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donoghue (who is also the host of the podcast Sentimental Garbage). Her novel centers around friendship and the absolute chaos of being in your early twenties. The main characters have one of the most warm, realistic friendships I’ve encountered in fiction. Truly pained me to finish because I didn’t want it to end.
Funny Story by Emily Henry. This is my favorite of her books so far! Absolutely adored the love interest (mostly because he was really fucking nice, which, like, more of that, please) and found myself yearning for a northern Michigan escape.
All Fours by Miranda July, a novel that’s giving “what the fuck did I just read” but in a fun way (if you’ve read her other work, this will probably not surprise you). Follows the protagonist as she embarks on a cross-country road trip, only to stop thirty minutes from her home and become enamored with a younger man working at the Hertz car rental. A quote I underlined:
"I'd whipped myself into a froth of longing — or worked, created fictions...Was there any actual enchantment or was it all just survival, ways to muddle through?"
TASTES
Oysters from Matia Kitchen. Also, Matia Kitchen in general. If you ever find yourself visiting Orcas Island, this spot is a must!
The tajarin con burro e salvia from Spinasse — a pasta dish I will truly never forget. Egg yolk! Butter! SAGE!
My birthday cupcake, kindly procured by my friend Petr: strawberry, chocolate, very difficult to eat.
Rainier cherries, eaten directly from the bag. I love summer.
SIGHTS + SOUNDS
Under the Bridge, watched on a cross country flight. Time flew. Warning: this show is devastating.
Olympic trials (swimming, can you believe?). Favorite race was Gretchen Walsh’s world-record-breaking 100 meter butterfly. Icon!
of Montreal concert (though they lose points for starting their show at 10 PM on a Sunday). Teared up when they finished the encore with my absolute favorite song of all time.
The girl, so confusing version with lorde. It’s been on repeat with no sign of slowing down.
WEARABLES
Last day of my birthday discount! Could be fun:
