A little over a month ago, I got married. The day was wonderful in the same way a basket of wild strawberries might be: full of sweetness, withstanding a few imperfections, and totally ours.
The rest of this newsletter will be a wedding day photo diary, organized by topic. I hope you enjoy!
The outfits
I wasn’t particularly excited about dress shopping. But after trying on gown after gown with my mom and sister, I finally found something that utterly wowed me. And spoiler: it wasn’t a dress at all. Allow me to formally introduce the veil:
Gideon commissioned a stunning custom suit from K.E.P. (Ru Paul’s fave!). The fabric had a subtle sparkle to it, and embroidered in the collar were lyrics from “Passenger Seat” by Death Cab for Cutie.
Flowers + Decor
We held both our ceremony and reception at Chihuly Garden and Glass. The space boasts a stunning color palette of tangerines, reds, and sunshine yellows. Our florist played on the warm hues, pairing poppies and roses and franklinias in bursts.
In the spirit of both saving money and giving the party a personal touch, my mom and I designed everything — from the signage to the drink coasters.
The Ceremony
Curating the music for our ceremony felt akin to giving our love story a soundtrack.
The bulk of our short ceremony was spent reciting our vows. Each of us got creative with the presentation:
I cried happy tears (and ended up losing a false lash):
Gideon used the comic book I made for him six months into our relationship :
We recessed to “Brokedown - Parts 1 & 2” by The California Honeydrops. Give the song a listen and you’ll see why it called for impromptu skipping down the aisle.
The Reception
I wish I could recreate the utter joy of having so many people I love in one room.
Dinner went by in a flash. My mom welcomed everyone, and both Gideon’s dad and my dad gave sweet speeches. I drank champagne and flitted around the room like a lightning bug (and made time to eat food! Such a win!).
Most of my favorite moments were captured on the disposable cameras we left on each table:
My dad and I threw together a dance to “Hang onto Yourself” by David Bowie on the morning of the wedding. Shocked it went off without a hitch!
On the other hand, Gideon and I had practiced our moves countless times. We swing-danced to “In My Baby’s Arms” by The California Honeydrops and Amethyst Starr.
But best of all was a bunch of our friends and family line dancing to Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ‘Em:”
The Jackets
We commissioned our friend Lucas to design us matching denim jackets for our exit. If you aren’t familiar with Lucas’ art, he creates rhinestoned masterpieces with pop culture flair. Easiest money we spent in the entire wedding planning process!
Our wedding was the best day of my life so far. Thanks so much for reliving it with me!
